Automated Generation & Interactive Visualization of As-Built Hidden Building Components
About The Project Faculty Members Students Industry Partner

Goals

This project aims at detecting hidden building components, automatically generating their as-built 3D models, and interactively visualizing them using Augmented Reality (AR).

The main goal of the project is to build a user-friendly software that allows construction companies and other end users to detect as-built hidden components in buildings (e.g. rebars, wires, pipes, etc.) in a non-destructive way; in other words without having to destroy or damage major existing components. Throughout this Create-X project, we focus on building strong collaborative and entrepreneurship skills, wherein students work with a faculty member from AUB and experts from the industry to achieve the goals.

Challenges

Challenges

The team will be using human-centered design thinking to build a simple prototype based on the feedback of early adopters. Multiple imaging and signal processing techniques are considered to gather data on hidden building components. The data will then be analyzed using machine learning and computer vision, transformed into an as-built BIM, and interactively visualized using Augmented Reality (AR). Issues to be considered are the accuracy, the cost, and time performance of the adopted techniques.
